RESUMO

To explore the factors affecting the use of artificial intelligence generated content (AIGC) by subject librarians through understanding their perceptions of AIGC. Interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) and technology acceptance model (TAM) were used in semi-structured interviews to explore the external variables of perceived ease of use and perceived usability of AIGC application in subject librarians. The perceptions of subject librarians towards AIGC included performance, risk perceptions, ability enhancement, and affective attitude. Attentions were paid to AIGC's performances in providing customized services, optimizing collection resources and improving cost efficiency. The risk perception involved technical stability, data security, user acceptance and occupational risk, the ability enhancement involved the improvement of personal literacy, innovative ability, and self-confidence through the use of AIGC technology, and the affective attitudes included not only excitement and anticipation for the technical potential of AIGC, but also concerns and skepticism about it, and critical attitudes toward its application in academic settings and the ethical issues it may raise. TAM analysis on the factors affecting the use of AIGC by subject librarians indicates that the external influencing factors of perceived ease of use include personal literacy, innovative ability, self-confidence enhancement and affective attitude; the external influencing factors of perceived usability include precise service, collection resource optimization, cost-effectiveness, technological risk, user acceptance and occupational risk. These factors constitute a theoretical framework for understanding and promoting the acceptance and effective use of AIGC by subject librarians. TAM analysis combined with IPA exploration on the external variables of perceived ease of use and perceived usability of AIGC application can identify the key factors affecting subject librarians' perceptions of AIGC, propose strategies for optimizing librarians' roles, enhancing information recognition ability and privacy protection, thus providing guidance for effective use of AIGC in library.

Tire wear particles (TWP) are a prevalent form of microplastics (MPs) extensively distributed in the environment, raising concerns about their environmental behaviors and risks. However, knowledge regarding the properties and toxicity of these particles at environmentally relevant concentrations, specifically regarding the role of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) generated during TWP photoaging, remains limited. In this study, the evolution of EPFRs on TWP under different photoaging times and their adverse effects on Caenorhabditis elegans were systematically investigated. The photoaging process primarily resulted in the formation of EPFRs and reactive oxygen species (O2•-, ⋅OH, and 1O2), altering the physicochemical properties of TWP. The exposure of nematodes to 100 µg/L of TWP-50 (TWP with a photoaging time of 50 d) led to a significant decrease in locomotory behaviors (e.g., head thrashes, body bends, and wavelength) and neurotransmitter contents (e.g., dopamine, glutamate, and serotonin). Similarly, the expression of neurotransmission-related genes was reduced in nematodes exposed to TWP-50. Furthermore, the addition of free-radical inhibitors significantly suppressed TWP-induced neurotoxicity. Notably, correlation analysis revealed a significantly negative correlation between EPFRs levels and the locomotory behaviors and neurotransmitter contents of nematodes. Thus, it was concluded that EPFRs on photoaged TWP induce neurotoxicity by affecting neurotransmission. These findings elucidate the toxicity effects and mechanisms of EPFRs, emphasizing the importance of considering their contributions when evaluating the environmental risks associated with TWP.

RESUMO

This research investigates how establishing national marine parks in China enhances marine tourism ecology. Analyzing data from 52 coastal cities between 2006 and 2019, it uses a multi-period difference-in-differences method to evaluate the parks' impact on tourism eco-efficiency. The results show that national marine parks significantly improve coastal cities' tourism eco-efficiency, especially in the Bohai Rim and seaside cities. The study attributes this improvement to the reduction of fixed asset investments, which controls the scale of tourism development. These findings provide vital insights for countries seeking to revitalize their marine tourism sectors through similar ecological restoration strategies.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) at different stages of the pandemic. This study aims to assess the lives and disease status of PD patients during the zero-COVID policy period and after ending the zero-COVID policy. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study included two online surveys among PD patients in China, from May 30 to June 30 in 2022 and from January 1 to February 28 in 2023, respectively. The survey questionnaires contained four sections: (1) status of COVID-19 infection; (2) impact on motor and non-motor symptoms; (3) impact on daily and social lives; and (4) impact on PD disease management. RESULTS: A total of 1764 PD patients participated in the first online survey, with 200 patients having lockdown experience and 3 being COVID-19-positive (0.17%). In addition, 537 patients participated in the second online survey, with 467 patients having COVID-19 infection (86.96%). (1) During zero-COVID, all of the COVID-19-positive patients had mild symptoms of COVID-19 and no death was reported. After zero-COVID, 83.51% of the COVID-19-positive patients had mild symptoms. The overall death rate and inpatient mortality rate of COVID-19-positive PD patients were 3.21% and 30.00%, respectively. (2) During zero-COVID, 49.43% of PD patients reported worsening of PD-related symptoms (lockdown vs. unlockdown, 60.50% vs. 48.02%, P = 0.0009). After zero-COVID, 54.93% of PD patients reported worsening of PD-related symptoms (COVID-19 positive vs. COVID-19 negative, 59.31% vs. 25.71%, P < 0.0001). (3) During zero-COVID, 62.36% of patients felt worried, and 'limited outdoor activities' (55.39%) was the top reason for mental health problems. After zero-COVID, 59.03% of patients felt worried, with 'poor health' (58.10%) being the top reason. The PD patients tended to change their daily activities from offline to online, and their economic and caregiver burdens increased both during and after zero-COVID. (4) Most PD patients would like to choose online rehabilitation during (69.56%) and after zero-COVID (69.27%). The demand for online medication purchasing also increased during (47.00%) and after zero-COVID (26.63%). CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic aggravated the motor and non-motor symptoms of PD patients either during or after the zero-COVID policy period. The PD patients also experienced prominent mental health problems, changes in daily activities, and increases in economic and caregiver burdens. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed ways of PD management with increasing demands for online medication purchasing and rehabilitation.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging pollutants widely distributed in the environment, inducing toxic effects in various organisms. However, the neurotoxicity and underlying mechanisms of simulated sunlight-aged MPs have rarely been investigated. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations (0, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 µg/L) of virgin polystyrene (V-PS) and aged polystyrene (A-PS) for 120 hpf to evaluate the neurotoxicity. The results demonstrated that simulated sunlight irradiation altered the physicochemical properties (morphology, functional groups, and chemical composition) of V-PS. Exposure to A-PS causes greater toxicity on locomotor ability in larval zebrafish than V-PS. Motor neuron development was disrupted by transgenic (hb9-GFP) zebrafish larvae exposed to A-PS, with significant alterations in neurotransmitter levels (ACh, DA, 5-HT, and GABA) and enzyme activity (AChE, ChAT, and ChE). Further investigation found that exposure to A-PS had a significantly impact on the expression of neurotransmission and neurodevelopment-related genes in zebrafish. These findings suggest that A-PS induces neurotoxicity by its effects on neurotransmission and neurodevelopment. This study highlights the neurotoxic effects and mechanisms of simulated sunlight irradiation of MPs, providing new insights for assessing the ecological risks of photoaged MPs in the environment.

Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) are decorated by l-cysteine (L-Cys), and the resultant chiral L-Cys/AuNPs can be used for colorimetric discrimination and spectroscopic detection of the tyrosine (Tyr) enantiomers. Melamine (Mel) can induce the aggregation of the L-Cys/AuNPs through ligand exchange, leading to a distinct color change from wine red to purple. Owing to the same rotatory direction of L-Cys/AuNPs and L-Tyr, the L-Cys/AuNPs exhibit a significantly higher binding affinity toward L-Tyr than D-Tyr, and thus the Mel induced aggregation of the L-Cys/AuNPs is greatly alleviated by the protection from the L-Tyr protective layer. Therefore, the Tyr enantiomers can be simply discriminated by naked eyes. In addition, the absorbance of the aggregated L-Cys/AuNPs at ∼630 nm increases linearly with decreasing concentrations of L-Tyr ranging from 10 nM to 1 mM due to the weakened protection effect from L-Tyr, and thus spectroscopic detection of L-Tyr can also be accomplished by the developed L-Cys/AuNPs with a limit of detection (LOD) of 5.3 nM.

Tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA) has been used as an alternative flame retardant in various fields. However, the long-term effects of TCBPA on the nervous system remain unclear. Thus, Caenorhabditis elegans (L4 larvae) were selected as a model animal to investigate the neurotoxic effects and underlying mechanisms after 10 d of TCBPA exposure. Exposure to TCBPA (0.01-100 µg/L) decreased locomotive behavior in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and lipofuscin accumulation were significantly increased, and the expression of sod-3 was upregulated in the exposed nematodes, indicating that TCBPA exposure induced oxidative damage. Furthermore, 100 µg/L TCBPA exposure caused a reduction in dopamine and serotonin levels, and damage in dopaminergic and serotoninergic neurons, which was further confirmed by the downregulated expression of related genes (e.g., dop-1, dop-3, cat-1, and mod-1). Molecular docking analysis demonstrated the potential of TCBPA to bind to the neurotransmitter receptor proteins DOP-1, DOP-3, and MOD-1. These results indicate that chronic exposure to TCBPA induces neurotoxic effects on locomotive behavior, which is associated with oxidative stress and damage to dopaminergic and serotoninergic neurons.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have implicated abnormal insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, but findings have been inconsistent. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis to compare IGF-1 levels in schizophrenia patients with healthy controls and explored factors contributing to variability between estimates. In an independent sample (58 chronic schizophrenia patients and 30 healthy controls), we investigated differences in IGF-1 levels among schizophrenia subgroups with distinct cognitive profiles, identified using k-means clustering based on five cognitive domains from The Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status. Associations between serum IGF-1 levels and clinical and neurocognitive improvements were also examined. RESULTS: The meta-analysis revealed significantly lower serum IGF-1 levels in schizophrenia patients compared to healthy controls, albeit with high heterogeneity. Medication status, BMI, and severity of negative symptoms were identified as potential contributors to this heterogeneity. In our independent study, antipsychotic treatment led to a significant increase in IGF-1 levels, and lower pre-treatment serum IGF-1 levels correlated with greater improvement in cognitive deficits, particularly in a subgroup with more severe cognitive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings support the "IGF-1 deficiency hypothesis" in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Further research is crucial to elucidate the role of IGF-1 in the cognitive impairments associated with schizophrenia.

Lithium, is the most ideal anode material for lithium-based batteries. However, the overgrowth of lithium dendrites and the low lithium-ion diffusion rate at low temperatures limit the further application of lithium metal anodes. Here, the applied magnetic field is introduced inside the lithium metal anode by using a novel magnetic metal-organic framework as a current collector. The magnetic field can improve the conductivity of this novel current collector, thus accelerating the diffusion of lithium ions in the battery, an advantage that is particularly prominent at low temperatures. In addition, the current collector can stabilize the solid electrolyte interface and inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance. The symmetrical cell at room temperature can exceed 4600 h with a hysteresis voltage of only 9 mV. After 300 cycles at room temperature, the capacity of full cell is still 142 mA h g-1 , and it remains stable for 380 cycles at 5 °C (capacity above 120 mA h g-1 ). The strategy of constructing novel current collector with magnetic field can promote the further application of lithium batteries in extreme conditions such as low temperatures.

Living alone is an objective sign of social isolation. It is uncertain whether living alone worsens clinical outcomes in heart failure (HF) patients. We aimed to assess how living alone affected clinical outcomes in individuals with HF. We searched the electronic databases of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane from 1990 to April 2022 for studies comparing living alone with HF. A random-effects model with inverse variance was used to pool adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Seven studies were deemed to meet the standards. In patients with HF, compared with living with others, living alone was associated with an elevated risk of any hospitalization at the 30-day (HR: 1.78, 95% CI: 1.09-2.89), 90-day (HR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.02-1.51), or ≥1-year (HR: 1.14, 95% CI: 1.04-1.26) follow-up periods. HF patients living alone also had a greater risk of any hospitalization or death at the 30-day (HR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.15-2.11), 90-day (HR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.05-1.50), and ≥1-year (HR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.09-1.28) follow-up periods. However, patients living alone had no increased risk of all-cause death at the 30-day (HR: 1.0, 95% CI: 0.19-5.36), 90-day (HR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.03-7.42), or ≥ 1-year (HR: 1.10, 95% CI: 0.73-1.67) follow-up periods. In comparison to living with others, living alone was associated with an increased risk of any hospitalization but not all-cause death in HF patients.

Florfenicol, as a replacement for chloramphenicol, can tightly bind to the A site of the 23S rRNA in the 50S subunit of the 70S ribosome, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis and bacterial proliferation. Due to the widespread use in aquaculture and veterinary medicine, florfenicol has been detected in the aquatic environment worldwide. Concerns over the effects and health risks of florfenicol on target and non-target organisms have been raised in recent years. Although the ecotoxicity of florfenicol has been widely reported in different species, no attempt has been made to review the current research progress of florfenicol toxicity, hormesis, and its health risks posed to biota. In this study, a comprehensive literature review was conducted to summarize the effects of florfenicol on various organisms including bacteria, algae, invertebrates, fishes, birds, and mammals. The generation of antibiotic resistant bacteria and spread antibiotic resistant genes, closely associated with hormesis, are pressing environmental health issues stemming from overuse or misuse of antibiotics including florfenicol. Exposure to florfenicol at µg/L-mg/L induced hormetic effects in several algal species, and chromoplasts might serve as a target for florfenicol-induced effects; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms are completely lacking. Exposure to high levels (mg/L) of florfenicol modified the xenobiotic metabolism, antioxidant systems, and energy metabolism, resulting in hepatotoxicity, renal toxicity, immunotoxicity, developmental toxicity, reproductive toxicity, obesogenic effects, and hormesis in different animal species. Mitochondria and the associated energy metabolism are suggested to be the primary targets for florfenicol toxicity in animals, albeit further in-depth investigations are warranted for revealing the long-term effects (e.g., whole-life-cycle impacts, multigenerational effects) of florfenicol, especially at environmental levels, and the underlying mechanisms. This will facilitate the evaluation of potential hormetic effects and construction of adverse outcome pathways for environmental risk assessment and regulation of florfenicol.

Microplastics (MPs) are emerging environmental contaminants that often co-exist with tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in the environment. However, the joint effect of TBBPA and photoaged MPs at ambient concentrations remains unknown largely. In this study, the combined toxicity of ultraviolet-aged polystyrene (UV-PS) and TBBPA was investigated in Caenorhabditis elegans. UV irradiation could change the physical and chemical characteristics of polystyrene (PS), and UV-PS (90.218 µg/g) showed a stronger adsorption capacity than PS of 79.424 µg/g. Toxicity testing showed that 1 µg/L UV-PS enhanced the toxic effect of 1 µg/L TBBPA by reducing body length, locomotion behavior, and brood size in nematodes. Using ROS production, lipofuscin accumulation, and expression of gst-4::GFP as endpoints, the combined exposure of UV-PS and TBBPA induced stronger oxidative stress than TBBPA alone. Joint exposure to UV-PS and TBBPA significantly increased of Nile red and blue food dye in its intestinal tract compared to that in the TBBPA exposure group, indicating that co-exposure enhanced intestinal permeability. After co-exposure to UV-PS and TBBPA, the expression of the associated genes detected increased significantly. Therefore, UV-PS enhances the adverse effects of TBBPA through intestinal damage and oxidative stress in nematodes. These findings suggest that the co-presence of photoaged PS and TBBPA results in high environmental risks.

The development of clean energy and financial sectors have been highlighted as critical factors in tackling climate change and achieving net zero emissions goals. Hence, using a dataset for the top 20 emitter countries from 1990 to 2019, this study examines whether clean energy consumption, financial development, human capital, population, and economic growth are connected with environmental quality through a reduction in carbon emissions. The long-run estimates show that renewable energy utilization, financial development, and human capital are significant in reducing CO2 emissions in the quest for net zero emissions. Contrarily, economic growth and population have a increases CO2 emissions. The results of the causality test show a two-way causality between renewable energy use, financial development, economic growth, population, and CO2 emissions. Moreover, one incidence of unidirectional causality is observed from CO2 emissions to human capital. Based on the findings, policy implications are suggested.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) are emerging environmental contaminants that are ubiquitously detected in various environments and have toxic effects on various organisms. Nevertheless, the transgenerational reproductive toxicity and underlying mechanisms of PS-NPs remain largely unknown, especially for photoaged PS-NPs under ultraviolet irradiation. In this study, only the parental generation (P0) was exposed to virgin and aged PS-NPs at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1-100 µg/L), and subsequent generations (F1-F4) were cultured under normal conditions. Ultraviolet irradiation induced the generation of environmentally persistent free radicals and reactive oxygen species, which altered the physical and chemical characteristics of PS-NPs. The results of toxicity testing suggested that exposure to aged PS-NPs caused a more severe decrease in brood size, egg ejection rate, number of fertilized eggs, and hatchability than did the virgin PS-NPs in the P0, F1, and F2 generations. Additionally, a single maternal exposure to aged PS-NPs resulted in transgenerational effects on fertility in the F1 and F2 generations. Increased levels of H3K4 and H3K9 methylation were observed in the F1 and F2 generations, which were concomitant with the transgenerational downregulation of the expression of associated genes, such as spr-5, set-17, and met-2. On the basis of correlation analyses, the levels of histone methylation and the expression of these genes were significantly correlated to transgenerational reproductive effects. Further research showed that transgenerational effects on fertility were not observed in spr-5(by134), met-2(n4256), and set-17(n5017) mutants. Overall, maternal exposure to aged PS-NPs induced transgenerational reproductive effects via H3K4 and H3K9 methylation, and the spr-5, met-2, and set-17 genes were involved in the regulation of transgenerational toxicity. This study provides new insights into the potential risks of photoaging PS-NPs in the environment.

Cancer is a major health threat and a leading cause of human death worldwide. Surgical resection is the primary treatment for most cancers; however, some patients develop locoregional recurrence. Here, we developed an in situ cancer therapeutic system aimed to locally treat cancer and prevent postoperative recurrence. A functional scaffold, based on alginate/gelatin and crosslinked with copper ions, was fabricated by 3D printing and showed an excellent photothermal effect under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The combination of copper ions and NIR effectively killed thyroid cancer cells and patient-derived organoids, indicating a synergetic and broad-spectrum antitumor effect on thyroid cancer through the chemo-photothermal therapy. This implantable stent is designed to provide effective treatment in the vicinity of the tumor site and can be degraded without secondary surgery. INTRODUCTION: Sleep disorders are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and significantly impact quality of life. Herein, we surveyed the incidence and severity of sleep disorders in Chinese PD patients and observed their relationship with dopaminergic drugs. METHODS: We collected the demographic and disease information of 232 PD patients. The incidence and severity of sleep disorders were surveyed with the Parkinson's disease sleep scale (PDSS) Chinese version. Data on dopaminergic drug intake were collected and converted to levodopa equivalent doses (LED). RESULTS: The average total score of PDSS in 232 patients was 119.3 ± 19.7. There was a significant difference in PDSS scores between groups classified by the Hoehn-Yahr (H&Y) stage, but not between the groups classified by the type of dopaminergic drugs. Stepwise regression analysis revealed that the LED of dopaminergic drugs taken before bedtime (p < 0.00), LED of dopaminergic drugs taken over a 24-h period (p < 0.00), and scores of the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAMD) (p = 0.01) were determinants of PDSS. CONCLUSION: Sleep disorders in PD patients may be multifactorial. High dosage of dopaminergic drugs taken prior to sleep, daily total high dosage of dopaminergic drugs, and depression exert negative effects on subjective sleep. The timing and dosage of dopaminergic drugs taken before bedtime should be considered in PD management.

The impact of primary metabolites of organophosphate triesters (tri-OPEs), namely, organophosphate diesters (di-OPEs), on the ecology, environment, and humans cannot be ignored. While extensive studies have been conducted on tri-OPEs, research on the environmental occurrence, toxicity, and health risks of di-OPEs is still in the preliminary stage. Understanding the current research status of di-OPEs is crucial for directing future investigations on the production, distribution, and risks associated with environmental organophosphate esters (OPEs). This paper specifically reviews the metabolization process from tri-OPEs to di-OPEs and the occurrence of di-OPEs in environmental media and organisms, proposes typical di-OPEs in different media, and classifies their toxicological and epidemiological findings. Through a comprehensive analysis, six di-OPEs were identified as typical di-OPEs that require prioritized research. These include di-n-butyl phosphate (DNBP), bis(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate (BBOEP), bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BDCIPP), bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (BCEP), bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPP), and diphenyl phosphate (DPHP). This review provides new insights for subsequent toxicological studies on these typical di-OPEs, aiming to improve our understanding of their current status and provide guidance and ideas for research on the toxicity and health risks of di-OPEs. Ultimately, this review aims to enhance the risk warning system of environmental OPEs.

The past decades have witnessed the evolution of electronic and photonic integrated circuits, from application specific to programmable1,2. Although liquid-phase DNA circuitry holds the potential for massive parallelism in the encoding and execution of algorithms3,4, the development of general-purpose DNA integrated circuits (DICs) has yet to be explored. Here we demonstrate a DIC system by integration of multilayer DNA-based programmable gate arrays (DPGAs). We find that the use of generic single-stranded oligonucleotides as a uniform transmission signal can reliably integrate large-scale DICs with minimal leakage and high fidelity for general-purpose computing. Reconfiguration of a single DPGA with 24 addressable dual-rail gates can be programmed with wiring instructions to implement over 100 billion distinct circuits. Furthermore, to control the intrinsically random collision of molecules, we designed DNA origami registers to provide the directionality for asynchronous execution of cascaded DPGAs. We exemplify this by a quadratic equation-solving DIC assembled with three layers of cascade DPGAs comprising 30 logic gates with around 500 DNA strands. We further show that integration of a DPGA with an analog-to-digital converter can classify disease-related microRNAs. The ability to integrate large-scale DPGA networks without apparent signal attenuation marks a key step towards general-purpose DNA computing.
